Talk on Work and Rest
Introduction:
 | Being busy is one of the characteristics of the modern world. Esp. HK. |

| Trend of the society: efficient, know more, get more degree, learning in the whole life,

Tends to : use all our small bit of time, energy and mind to squeeze into the mode of
the running engine of the world. This is Satan’s strategy. (Turning us to the centre of
the busy world, away from our own health and Christ. )
| Church: also buy the concepts of the society: more meeting, complex structure, doing
more, spending more time in ministry, ….
E.g. a sister, |
| Only if you agree the following concepts in your life, you can get real rest in God. |
Concept of work:
It is a blessing from God:
- Without work, we feel bored. E.g. retired
| That’s why work can give us satisfaction. E.g. doing notes, powerpoint, sharing with
students. |
| Danger: this turn us away from God with Good reasons. E.g. many good teachers. |
It is a curse from God:
| See Genesis: : 3:17-19

| Gene 3:17 (和) 又 對 亞 當 說 ： 你 既 聽 從 妻 子 的 話 ﹐ 吃 了 我 所 吩 咐 你 不 可 吃 的 那 樹 上 的 果 子 ﹐ 地 必 為 你 的 緣 故 受 咒 詛 ； 你 必 終 身 勞 苦 才 能 從 地 裡 得 吃 的 。18 地 必 給 你 長 出 荊 棘 和 蒺 藜 來 ； 你 也 要 吃 田 間 的 菜 蔬 。 19 你 必 汗 流 滿 面 才 得 糊 口 ﹐ 直 到 你 歸 了 土 ﹐ 因 為 你 是 從 土 而 出 的 。 你 本 是 塵 土 ﹐ 仍 要 歸 於 塵 土 。

| So, we are preparing to suffer. E.g. tired, rebuked by boss, pressure, …. |
| Danger: we feel injustice when boss is not good and fair to me. E.g. distribution of
works. |
Promotion should not be our aim:
| Society tell us: when we are senior, we should be promoted. So, strive to work more and
get more degrees.
Q. How many of you study part-time? Aim?

| Q. Do you feel safe when you are very low in rank and another junior one much higher
rank than you? Do you satisfied? |
| E.g. principal in school, my case. |
| Satan tell us: promotion is here on this earth
God tell us: promotion is in eternity. |
There is no contribution to the work of God by our work. We can only participate in God’s
work.
Prayer and Bible Study: is an important job:
Concept of rest:
We need rest in 7 day cycle
| God create the world in 6 days and stop his work in 7th day. |
| Survey: man’s efficiency in work is best when we can rest in the 7th day. |
| But many: work long time and still many work in the church on Sunday. |
Essence of rest: in Christ
| Sabbath: remember God |
| For us: to remember God, to listen God’s work, to evaluate our life
e.g. me: longer time of meditation in Saturday morning: |
| Many Christian: no rest, not enough time being with God: life is a mess. |
| Read 1Cor 3: 10-15
Q. Do you really believe that? |
Usefulness of rest:
| to renew our life: spiritually, emotionally, physically. |
| We need Bible: to direct our life, to evaluate our self
I find that there are many wrong concepts in my mind to tear down life. E.g. goal in work,
how I handle boss, relationship with my wife, ….. |
| We need leisure to make us feel better: e.g. swimming, music, …..
What type of rest? It depends on the person. Some even find rest when ministering others.
E.g. visit others, comfort others, …. |
How to tackle work and rest in real situation?
Evaluate your goal:
| Q. Do you want to promote in your work? |
| Q. Do you seek praise from men? |
| Q. Do you seek to get more certificates? |
| Q. Do you seek to know Christ more as your life goal? |
| Our busy life is mainly due to us. |
Evaluate your motive when your job is very demanding:
| many times: we are busy because we strive to gain (e.g. promotion, praises from others,
our wrong conscience, more money, )
We are responsible to being busy ( in most cases) |
Cultivate a content spirit:
1Tim 6:6 ( 和) 然 而 ﹐ 敬 虔 加 上 知 足 的 心 便 是 大 利 了 ； 7 因 為 我 們 沒 有 帶 甚 麼 到 世 上 來 ﹐ 也 不 能 帶 甚 麼 去 。8 只 要 有 衣 有 食 ﹐ 就 當 知 足 。 9 但 那 些 想 要 發 財 的 人 ﹐ 就 陷 在 迷 惑 ､ 落 在 網 羅 和 許 多 無 知 有 害 的 私 慾 裡 ﹐ 叫 人 沉 在 敗 壞 和 滅 亡 中 。
| Don’t need to have much money, a big house, beautiful cloth, …. |
| Not mean: buying luxurious thing is wrong. The essence is: we are content in whatever
situation. |
Gaurantee rest in Christ once a week and before the start of the day:
| not necessarily on Sunday. |
| guarantee rest in Christ before the day of work

Simplify your life:
| remember the balanced cycle: with God, work, family, social, ministry, rest |
| Don’t need to do much .So cut the unnecessary.
E.g. too much ministry work. |
| Should know the types of things before us: urgent and necessary, not urgent and
necessary, urgent and not necessary, not urgent and not necessary. |
Know your gifts in ministry:
| try different gifts |
| concentrate on the gift : you feel happy to do, that benefit others much |
| e.g. my case |
Say NO:
| We can only have the ability and strength to say no when we have good knowledge of the
word of God and good relationship with Christ. ---- to back me up. |
| Saying No is a battle vs. our own conscience and how others veiwing me. |
| Remember: our conscience is distorted ( 1Cor : 8:7 ) and not according to the mind of
God. |
| 1Cor 8:7 (和) 但 人 不 都 有 這 等 知 識 。 有 人 到 如 今 因 拜 慣 了 偶 像 ﹐ 就 以 為 所 吃 的 是 祭 偶 像 之 物 。 他 們 的 良 心 既 然 軟 弱 ﹐ 也 就 污 穢 了 。 |
Last but Not least:
Remember: if we have not a good relationship with Christ, our life certainly
fail (Even seems to do many good works in Christ).

工作與休息
這是一個影響你整個生命的題目，多重要！
聖經的工作觀念 :
a) 工作是上帝的祝福：小心_______________
!
b) 它也是來自上帝的詛咒：莫為________________
。
c) 升級作為我們的工作目標 ：unbiblical
d) 我們不能貢献(Contribute) 神的工作，我們只能參與 (Participate)神的工作
e) 祈禱和查考聖經是最重要的工作
聖經的休息觀念:
a) 我們需要在每一個星期中有休息
b) 休息的最重要因素 :____________
c) 休息的作用: 更新我們的生命

實際的生活上如何處理工作和休息?
a) 檢討你的目標
你要在你的工作上晉升嗎? 你尋求人的讚賞嗎?. 你尋求得到更多的証書
嗎? 你以認識基督更多作為你生命的目標嗎?
b) 當你的工作十分忙碌的時, 更是你檢討你的動機的時候！
c) 培養滿足的心態
d) 確保你一天的開始和每一個星期有一次在基督裏的安息
e) 簡化你的生活：只要生命平衡

g) say「NO」：沒有聖經的確信，很難say
no。
記得: 如果我們沒和基督的好關係﹐我們的生活註定失敗 (不要以為我們為基督做了很多工作！)
